- संयुक्त राष्ट्र के सदस्यों ने अगले 15 सालों में गरीबी को उसके हर रूप में समाप्त करने का लक्ष्य तय किया है। सितंबर में महासभा के दौरान इस फैसले पर अंतिम मुहर लग जाएगी लेकिन उन्हें पूरा करना आसान नहीं होगा।
- संयुक्त राष्ट्र के सदस्यों ने सतत विकास के जो 17 लक्ष्य तय किए गए हैं उनमें लैंगिक बराबरी, भूखमरी की समाप्ति, शारीरिक और मानसिक स्वास्थ्य और पर्यावरण संरक्षण शामिल है।
- नए लक्ष्य सहस्राब्दी लक्ष्यों को पूरा करने में मिले अनुभवों के आधार पर तय किए हैं। पिछले 15 सालों में बहुत से देशों ने गरीबी कम करने और लोगों को स्वास्थ्य सेवा उपलब्ध कराने में महत्वपूर्ण सफलता पाई है, लेकिन मेक्सिको का उदाहरण दिखाता है कि संपूर्ण सामाजिक विकास के लिए स्थिर आधार नहीं बना है।

Varanasi Chosen as ‘City of Music’ by UNESCO
Indian Town Varanasi was chosen as the global bandwagon of UNESCO “Cities of Music” under the Creative Cities Network by UNESCO. It was chosen in the music category under UNESCO’s “field of excellence” plan. The fields of excellence are classified into categories of literature, film, music, craft and folk art, design, media arts and gastronomy. Nine cities – Glasgow in the UK, Hanover and Mannheim in Germany, Ghent in Belgium, Hamamatsu in Japan, Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo, Bogota in Columbia, Seville in Spain and Bologna in Italy – are already part of UNESCO “Cities of Music”.

- The Reserve Bank of India on 17 July 2015 signed a Special Currency Swap Agreement with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
Under the arrangement, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka can draw up to 1.1 billion US dollar for a maximum period of six months. This special arrangement is in addition to the existing Framework on Currency Swap Arrangement for the SAARC Member Countries.

World Population Day was observed on 11 July 2015 across the world. The theme for the year 2015 is ‘Vulnerable Populations in Emergencies’. The theme focuses on the record number of people displaced by crises – some 60 million according to the latest UN figures. At present, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is working around the globe to respond to the rights and needs of women and girls, and help them to maintain their dignity by securing their safety, and restoring their access to sexual and reproductive health care. In 1989, in its decision 89/46, the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) declared 11 July as the day that should be observed as World Population Day by the International Community.
